Preparing a Vase for Cut Flowers
One of the most beautiful ways to display cut flowers is in a glass vase with a floral design. It’s important to prepare a glass vase before you add flowers to increase longevity. To begin with, you must ensure that any vase or container that you use to display cut flowers is thoroughly cleaned and free from debris and bacteria. Wash the vase with a solution of cleanser or bleach and water and ensure that you thoroughly clean all aspects of the container. After washing, rinse thoroughly making certain that vase is completely free from soap traces. Once you have the glass vase thoroughly washed and rinsed, it’s time to prepare your cut flowers.
Take your cuttings and strip away all of the lower leaves or buds from the stems. You must make sure that only bare stems will be submerged in the water. If you leave any greenery on the stems and place them in the water they will deteriorate quickly and create bacteria that will cause your flowers to decay at an accelerated rate. Always remove all greenery that is going to be placed below the water line.
This is an important step that is frequently overlooked. Once you have prepared the stems, cut them under water. You should make sure that the scissors or knife that you use is extremely sharp and cut between one to three inches off of the bottom of the stems. Making this cut while the stems are underwater will ensure that the stems will continue to absorb vital nutrients from the water.
When choosing cut flowers to display, make certain to consider the color of the flowers, the scent or fragrance that the flowers emit, the season you are selecting flowers for, and whether or not you genuinely like and appreciate the flower.
